Dr. Manuel M. Martín-Rodríguez elected full member of the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española [North American Academy of the Spanish Language]

Dr. Manuel M. Martín-Rodríguez elected full member of the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española [North American Academy of the Spanish Language].  
 
A ceremony scheduled for March 18, 2022, will welcome Dr. Martín-Rodríguez as a full, permanent member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE). Dr. Martín-Rodríguez will read a speech focused on his research on the Spanish-language popular poetry of the United States.
 
Full membership is the highest of three levels of association with the ANLE, and it entails membership as Corresponding Academic in Spain’s Real Academia Española (Spanish Royal Academy, RAE). New full members are elected in consideration of their merits and contributions to the study of the Spanish language in the United States, including its literature.
 
Only two other UC faculty are full members of the ANLE, Dr. Milton M. Azevedo (UC Berkeley), and Dr. Víctor Fuentes (UC Santa Bárbara), both of them emeriti.
 
The ANLE is responsible for the study of the Spanish language in North America, and if has been instrumental in the inclusion of North American words and expressions in the dictionary of the RAE, the most comprehensive and prestigious reference work in the field.
 
The ANLE is one of twenty-four members of the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (Association of Academies of the Spanish Language), an organism that brings together the academies of Spain, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, and nineteen Latin American countries.
